Information on using Telmex Pay Telephones in Mazatlán

There are still many pay telephones in Mazatlán.  Similarly to Canada and the USA, most people have cellular phones now so there are less pay telephones around.  However, as a foreign tourist, you may decide to use pay telephones instead of your cell phone.  This page will explain how to use pay telephones in Mazatlán.

What pay telephones are there in Mazatlán?

There are 2 types of pay telephones on the streets of Mazatlán: Telmex and private pay telephones  Telmex is the national telephone company and has the majority of pay telephones that you see on the street.  They use a specific pre-paid "Ladatel" card.  We recommend that you use Telmex pay telephones only.  There are other non-Telmex pay telephones that require you to use your credit card.  Using these telephones is very expensive!  We highly recommend that you do not use they pay telephones.

How can you obtain a Telmex "LadaTel" card?

You can purchase a pre-paid "LadaTel" telephone card at most convenience stores.  They come in various denominations, e.g. 50 pesos (approx US$3), 100 pesos (approx US$8).  It usually only costs a few pesos to call local telephone numbers.  Long distance to Canada or the USA costs about 5 pesos per minute.  So, depending on where you are calling and how much you will be calling, you can purchase the appropriate value card.  Ladatel cards frequently come with beautiful photos (see photos of some of our cards on this webpage).

How to use Telmex pay telephones in Mazatlán?

To use Telmex pay phones, pick up the receiver, then insert your Ladatel card with the picture facing upwards into the card slot.  Wait for the display to show you how much money you have left on your card.  Finally, dial the phone number you want to call.

There is an exception to the rule of always having the picture side up.  If the Pope is on the card, you will need to flip the card over for it to work!  Notice that there is no circuit on the Pope card in our photo.
