General Mazatlán Carnival Information

Mazatlán hosts possibly the 3rd largest Carnival (Mardi Gras) in the world.  Mazatlán has had a Carnival for over 100 years.  It is the final blowout party prior to lent each year.  It primarily takes place for 5 days exactly 6 weeks before Easter (semana santa).  If you in Mazatlán during this time, you should definitely go to some of the events!

There are many events put on throughout Mazatlán during Carnival.  There are usually a few large music concerts in the Angela Peralta theatre and the Teodoro Mariscal Stadium (i.e big baseball stadium).  The coronations of the Carnival Queen, King of Joy, Queen of Floral Games, and Child Queen are usually held in the Teodoro Mariscal Stadium also.  There are 2 huge parades that go on the Malecon.  The first one is on the Sunday night and the second is on the following Tuesday night.  There are many floats, band, and organizations.  Tens of thousands people line the malecon to watch the parades.  We especially love the balls of confetti that are broken over people's heads!  There are nightly beer gardens in Olas Altas with many bands and lots of Pacifico beer!  Also, in Olas Altas one night is the Naval Combat display of fireworks and laser show.  This event is to commemerate the defense of Mazatlán in 1864 from a French warship.  There is also the burning of a large puppet(marionette) which symbolizes the burning of bad mood, i.e. gets rid of any bad mood.  So, if you are looking to get a little culture on your trip to Mazatlán, we recommend checking out the Carnival and all it's events.
